Welcome to Thistle Yarns: The Journey Starts Here

Well hello there, and welcome to my little corner of the yarn world. I’m so pleased you’ve found Thistle Yarns. Let me introduce myself: I’m Wendy, a historian‑turned‑yarn‑dyer working from my home studio nestled in Midlothian, just outside Edinburgh. As a historian, I’ve always been drawn to the stories of Scotland—whether they come from the land, the past, or the people around me. In many ways, Thistle Yarns is my love letter to my home: its landscapes, its folklore, its heritage, and the communities that shape its identity.

When Thistle Yarns was still only a spark of an idea, I knew I wanted to build a brand that wasn’t just about creating unique colourways on natural fibres. I wanted something that celebrated Scottish heritage and creativity while also being environmentally responsible—a brand that creates skeins inspired by the stories of Scotland’s past, its landscapes, and its communities.

I want Thistle Yarns to be known for its sustainable practices and for producing yarn that’s kind—to the land, to the people who use it, and to the stories it carries. I’m not chasing perfection, but the decisions I make about the fibres I choose, the way I dye, and the packaging for each skein are all rooted in my desire to help the yarn community move toward more sustainable, mindful making.

My hope is that Thistle Yarns becomes a go‑to for crafters and makers who don’t want mass‑produced, artificial yarn. I want it to be a place that offers unique colourways with real stories behind them. My colourways are rooted in Scotland’s past and present, so when you cast on, you’re stitching a little sense of Scotland into whatever you’re making. Every shade is linked to something real—landscapes I love, significant moments in history, a piece of folklore, a childhood memory, or a connection to people who have shaped Scotland’s identity from past to present.

If you’ve read this far, thank you — it means more than you know. Here’s to stories, colour, and the joy of making, one stitch at a time.
