Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Thistle Yarns FAQ. If you’re looking for quick answers about yarn, orders, shipping, or care, you’ll find everything you need here. And if you ever need a hand, you’re always welcome to get in touch.

  • I currently offer a curated selection of natural‑fibre bases, including Merino, BFL, and blends in a range of weights. Each product page includes full fibre content, yardage, and recommended needle sizes.

  • Most colour-ways are small‑batch and limited edition, inspired by Scottish landscapes, stories, and seasons.

Some may return, but many are one‑off batches.

If you love something, it’s best to grab it while it’s available.

  • Hand‑dyed yarn naturally varies from skein to skein.

For larger projects, I recommend alternating skeins every few rows to create a beautifully blended finish.

  • Occasionally, yes — depending on the season and studio schedule.

If you have a colour-way in mind, feel free to reach out and I’ll let you know what’s possible.

  • All orders are dispatched from my home studio in Midlothian, Scotland.

  • Thistle Yarns provides international shipping. We ship worldwide from our studio in Scotland.

Yes — I ship across the UK, Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other regions worldwide.

  • Delivery times vary by location:

    • UK: 2–5 working days

    • Europe: 1–3 weeks

    • USA, Canada, Australia, NZ: 2–5 weeks

    • Rest of World: 2–6 weeks

These are estimates and may vary due to seasonal delays or customs processing.

  • If your parcel is significantly delayed, please get in touch.

Royal Mail considers a parcel lost after:

    • 10 working days (UK)

    • 25 working days (International)

If your order was sent with another delivery service, I’ll follow that carrier’s guidelines. I’ll always do my best to help resolve any issues.

  • International customers may be charged customs duties, VAT, or handling fees when their parcel arrives. These charges are set by local authorities and are the customer’s responsibility.

    United States customers:

US customs may occasionally apply import duties or handling fees. These are not included in the product or shipping price.

  • Your yarn is wrapped using plastic‑free, eco‑conscious materials wherever possible, including recyclable tissue and stickers, and sturdy boxes chosen to protect your skeins in transit.

  • Most elements are recyclable or reusable, though not every component is.

I aim to keep packaging thoughtful, minimal, and low‑impact.

  • Yes — if there’s a problem with your order, please contact me within 14 days of delivery.

Yarn must be returned in its original condition.

  • Sale items and custom‑dyed colour-ways are usually non‑returnable unless faulty.

  • Customers are responsible for return postage unless the item is faulty.

  • Most bases are best hand‑washed in cool water with a gentle wool wash. Lay flat to dry.

Superwash bases can tolerate more movement, but hand‑washing still helps preserve colour and softness.

  • Some colour-ways may release a small amount of dye on the first wash — especially deep or saturated shades.

This is normal for hand‑dyed yarn. Washing in cool water helps minimise this.

  • If you have a question that isn’t covered here, I’m always happy to help.
